How to Remotely Restart a Device?

Certain instances may demand organizations to restart their deployed devices remotely. A remote restart action may be particularly useful in situations when there’s a pending reboot action, but the user isn’t available to do it. In addition, restarting may be necessary for troubleshooting or for testing. This article describes how to remotely restart a device using Hexnode UEM.

With the help of Hexnode’s remote management capabilities, IT administrators can restart their managed Android, iOS, macOS, tvOS, ChromeOS, Windows and Linux devices over-the-air using the MDM console. The admin can seamlessly perform remote actions on individual devices or in bulk. Note that the user will not be notified about this restart action so any work which the user is on will be lost.

Pre-requisites:

  • This feature is supported on:
    1. Devices running Android 5.0 and above:
    2. Devices running Android 7.0 and above:
      • Enrolled via the Android Enterprise program as Device Owner.
      • Enrolled via Hexnode UEM app as Device Owner.
    3. Supervised iOS devices running iOS 10.3 or above.
    4. macOS devices running 10.13 or above.
    5. Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions (v1703+) and Windows 11.
    6. Supervised tvOS devices running tvOS 10.2 or above.
    7. ChromeOS devices.
    8. Linux devices.

  6. Click on Restart in the confirmation dialog.

To execute restart commands in bulk,

  1. Navigate to Manage > Devices.
  2. Check the required devices you need to restart.
  3. Select Restart Device from Actions.
  4. Click on Restart in the confirmation dialog.

The devices will restart instantly if you confirm restart. Any policy you’ve configured on the device won’t affect the reboot.

Notes:

  • On Android, the Restart Device action will fail if the Power Off option under Basic restrictions is disabled.
  • To view the status of the Restart Device action, go to Manage > Devices > Select Device > Action History.
  • Passcode enabled iOS devices will not be able to re-join the Wi-Fi networks after restarting. In such cases, the devices fail to communicate with the Hexnode MDM server.
  • Macs, Windows, ChromeOS and Linux devices restart within 5-10 minutes after the action gets applied to the device.
