How to Rename a Device or Set Friendly Name?

If your organization is enrolling a large number of devices, it is hard to identify a particular device from the list of enrolled devices without a distinct name. With Hexnode UEM, you can either rename a device or set a friendly name from the console. Renaming a device replaces the device’s name on the portal as well as on the device. On the other hand, the Set friendly name feature allows the admin to change the device name on the portal as well as on the Hexnode UEM app installed on the device but this will not change the actual device name.

Renaming a Device

Renaming a device allows the admin to replace the name of the device. The newly added device name reflects on the UEM management console as well as on the device settings.

Note:

  • Only supervised iOS (iOS 5.0+) and supervised Apple TV (tvOS 9.0+) devices can be renamed.
  • The device name may have up to 63 characters.

To rename a single device,
  1. On your Hexnode UEM console, go to Manage tab.
  2. Click on the device name, this will take you to the Device Summary page.
  3. Click on Actions and select Rename Device from the menu.
  4. Type in a name.
  5. Uncheck Append Number.
  6. If you want to set/update the friendly name to match the device name, check Update Friendly Name option.
  7. Click Execute.

The following image illustrates the change on the portal after renaming:
The device’s name is updated on the Hexnode portal.

On the device-end, the device name is modified once the rename action is successfully executed.

To rename devices in bulk,
  1. Go to the “Manage” tab.
  2. Select the devices which need to be renamed or select all devices to rename all the enrolled devices.
  3. Select “Rename Device” from “Actions”.
  4. Provide a name.
    • Uncheck Append Number to name them all the same.
    • Check Append Number and set a starting number if you want to name the devices differently. For example, if the name is set as “Corporate iPad” and starting number as 5, then the first device will take the name “Corporate iPad-5”, the second device “Corporate iPad-6” and so on. If Append Number is unchecked, all the devices will be named as “Corporate iPad”.
  5. Click Execute.
Note:

  • Wildcards can be used to rename the device as per the details entered in the Hexnode UEM console. The following wildcards are supported:
    • %deviceid%
    • %email%
    • %imei%
    • %osname%
    • %serialnumber%
    • %osversion%
    • %username%
  • The final name will truncate to the first 63 characters, in case it exceeds the character limit.
