Rename device and Set friendly name
1. How do I rename a device?
Rename Device and Set Friendly Name are the device renaming features supported by Hexnode MDM.
Renaming the device changes the actual device name, the device name in the Hexnode MDM portal, and in the Hexnode app installed on the device. Only supervised iOS devices can be renamed using Hexnode.
You can set a friendly name on any device that is enrolled in Hexnode MDM. Setting a friendly name changes the device name in the Hexnode MDM portal and the Hexnode app installed on the device. But the actual device name cannot be altered using Set Friendly Name action.
You can use wildcards to both rename and set a friendly name based on the device/user details. These wildcards can simplify renaming a large number of devices at the same time. Here’s the list of wildcards that can be used:

| %imei% | The International Mobile Equipment Identity assigned to the device. This number uniquely identifies the mobile device. |
| %serialnumber% | The serial number of the device. |
| %username% | Name of the user, the sAMAccount name or the email address associated with the user. |
| %email% | The email address associated with a particular user. |
| %osname% | Name of the operating system running on the device. |
| %osversion% | The version number of the device’s OS. |
| %devicename% | Name of the device as shown in the portal.

This wildcard is supported only for Rename Device action. |
Hexnode also allows you to append numbers to the names to distinguish devices when collectively naming devices. For example, if you set the device name as Phone and the starting append number as 1 while collectively renaming or friendly naming a set of devices, they will be named as Phone-1, Phone-2, etc.
2. If I rename a device within the Hexnode portal, will that name change in the device also?
Yes, renaming the device using Hexnode MDM also changes the actual device name.
Hexnode MDM allows the admin to both rename a device and set a friendly name. Renaming a device changes the actual device name, the device name in the Hexnode MDM portal as well as the Hexnode app installed on the device. Only supervised iOS devices can be renamed.
Likewise, the Set friendly name action in Hexnode allows admin to change the device name. The new name set via this action will be reflected both on the Hexnode portal and the Hexnode app installed on the device. But this will not change the actual device name.
