How to add custom boot and shutdown animations for Samsung Knox devices?

The default boot-up and shutdown animation in an Android device is usually the device manufacturer logo. Hexnode lets you personalize these animations with your enterprises’ custom animations and sounds. On a Samsung Knox 2.5+ device, you can brand the boot-up, boot-loop, and shutdown animations using Hexnode UEM.

Pre-requisites:

Notes:

  • For this feature to work, you must associate a KPE Premium license key to the target devices. With Hexnode, you can either associate a policy containing both the key and custom boot/shutdown animation simultaneously or associate a policy containing the key to the target devices prior to configuring the boot/shutdown animation.

To customize boot/shutdown animation

Notes:

There might be a slight delay to set boot and shutdown animations and sounds, since the audio and animation files have to be downloaded on the device.

  1. On your Hexnode MDM portal, go to Policies.
  2. Click on New Policy > New Blank Policy if you want to create a new policy or, you can edit an already existing policy.
  3. Add a Policy Name and Description (optional).
  4. Go to Android > Configurations > Boot/Shutdown Animation.
  5. Click on Configure.
  6. Configure the customizations that you require. The available options are:
    • Boot-up animation: Upload the custom animation that you want to display during the device boot-up. Only QMG file format is supported for animations.
    • Boot-loop animation: Upload a QMG animation file that has to be displayed during the device boot-loop.
    • Boot-up animation sound: Upload a .ogg audio file. This music file will be played during boot-up.
    • Delay in boot-up animation sound: Set the number of milliseconds to delay playing the boot-up animation sound. You can choose a value between 0 and 2147483646.
    • Shutdown animation: Upload a QMG animation file to be displayed during the device shutdown.
    • Shutdown animation sound: Upload an Ogg audio file that has to be played during the device shutdown.
  7. Next, head on to General Settings > Knox Platform for Enterprise > Configure. Select the KPE Premium license key from the list of keys already added to the portal from the Admin tab. (Skip this step if the key is already associated with the device)
  8. Click on Save.

Notes:

You can also upload the QMG and Ogg file in Admin > File Management, and these files can directly be used to create a Boot/Shutdown Animation policy.

Warning:

Customizing boot/shutdown animation will not work on Samsung J3 (Verizon device).

Associate Policies with Devices / Groups

If you have already saved the policy

  1. On the Policies tab, select the desired policy.
  2. Click on Manage > Associate Targets.
  3. From Devices/Users/User Groups/Device Groups/Domains, select the targets to which you want to attach the policy.
  4. Click on Associate.

If you haven’t saved the policy

  1. After you have completed configuring the policy, go to Policy Targets.
  2. From Devices/Users/User Groups/Device Groups/Domains, select the targets to which you want to attach the policy.
  3. Click on Save.

After associating the policy, QMG or Ogg files will be pushed to the devices. The Downloads tab in the Hexnode UEM/Hexnode for Work app helps users keep track of the download status of the files pushed from the Hexnode portal. As the download progresses, the Downloads tab displays the distributed files in either of the following sub-sections: Active, Failed, and Completed.

  • Active: Displays ongoing downloads.
  • Failed: Displays the files that failed to download.
  • Completed: Lists all of the successfully downloaded files.

You can use the search option at the top of the Downloads tab to search any specific file. You can tap the ellipsis icon at the top right corner and click the Refresh button from the drop-down to refresh the download entries of the files pushed from the Hexnode portal. There is also a “Clear All” option to remove all the download entries. It will only remove the download entries from the Downloads tab, whereas the downloaded files will remain on the device.

Note:

Custom boot and shutdown animation cannot be distributed to Android 11+ devices if ‘All Files access’ is not granted to the Hexnode UEM/Hexnode for Work app.

On devices running Android 11+, ‘Manage All Files’ permission is required for the Hexnode UEM to access device storage.

  • This permission should be granted for the Hexnode UEM app during enrollment.
  • Mange All Files permission on Hexnode UEM app

  • When the Hexnode UEM/Hexnode for Work app is updated, ‘Manage All Files’ permission may not be granted. Hence, to avail file management and distribution functionalities, user should grant this permission when the Hexnode UEM app prompts while opening the updated app.
  • Manage All Files Permission during update

  • Alternatively, you can also give ‘All Files Access’ for the Hexnode UEM app from the device settings page.
