When our users try to update the system OS manually on the device, they are shown some error as “System update is blocked. Please contact your device admin for more info.” Anyone has any idea as to what might be causing this?

did you configure OS Update policy on this device?
@nevaeh, yeah we do have a policy associated with the device that has the OS update payload for Android devices configured as – “update during inactive hours”. The hours are set during midnight and the user mostly clicked this option during their work timing around morning/afternoon.
Once we removed this policy, user was able to update the OS successfully.
Is this the expected workflow? Shouldnt manual updates be restricted as well when update during inactive hours is set in the OS update policy?
Thank you
Hi @aura-bella, it is the expected behavior when you associate such policy configuration. Android expects available system updates to be installed only during the inactive hours set with Hexnode, including any manual update on the device. From here, you could take two ways –
- Wait for the update to take place typically during the inactive hours.
- Choose another update option such that the user can manually install an update. You may choose the options – ‘Default’ or ‘Update automatically’ under the same configuration.
You may also choose ‘Postpone update’ to turn off OS updates for up to 30 days.

Thank you @Zach. We’ll just inform the users that they need not worry about updates. Just wanted to keep the device updates happening, preferably … during off-work timings.
