Hi everyone,

I’m exploring how custom notifications can be used effectively for managing devices across different platforms. For example, how can these notifications help improve communication or device management workflows? Also, I’d love to know how this feature works in Hexnode UEM. Looking forward to insights and experiences!

Hey! Custom notifications are a game-changer, especially in situations where you need to reach users immediately. For instance, in the educational sector, you could notify students about system maintenance or upcoming updates. In retail, these notifications can help alert store managers about compliance issues. Since it works across platforms, it’s super convenient for multi-device environments.

I’ve used this feature for remote work scenarios. If an employee forgets to check an urgent email, a quick custom notification ensures they get the message without delay. Setting it up in Hexnode is straightforward and can save a lot of time.

I also use notifications to remind users to return loaned devices. Including wildcards like %name% and %devicenotes% makes messages more personal and helps track details. It’s also great for alerting users about upcoming OS updates. For example, I include the %osversion% wildcard to show the current OS version and highlight the required update version, making it clear and actionable.

Another use case is for security alerts. Imagine detecting suspicious activity or needing a user to reset their password quickly. A notification via Hexnode ensures the message doesn’t get buried in their inbox.

Thank you for the input! Custom notifications indeed provide flexibility and immediate reach. Here’s how you can use this feature in Hexnode UEM:

  1. Log in to your Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Navigate to Manage > Devices.
  3. Select the devices to which the message should be sent. Alternatively, choose Users, Device Groups, User Groups, or Directory Services for broader distribution.
  4. From Actions, select Broadcast Message.
  5. Type your message (maximum 500 characters) and include any of the following wildcards if needed:
    • %devicename%: Device Name
    • %imei%: IMEI Number
    • %serialnumber%: Serial Number
    • %name%: User Name
    • %email%: Email
    • %alternateemail%: Alternate Email
    • %deviceid%: Device ID
    • %domain%: Domain
    • %netbiosname%: NetBIOS Name
    • %udid%: Unique Device ID
    • %model%: Device Model
    • %phonenumber%: Phone Number
    • %iccid%: ICCID Number
    • %wifimacaddress%: Wi-Fi MAC Address
    • %department%: Department
    • %assettag%: Unique Device Identification Number
    • %devicenotes%: Custom Device Notes
    • %osname%: OS Name
    • %osversion%: OS Version
  6. Click Send, and the notification will be delivered to the selected devices.

Note:

  • On Android devices, notifications will appear as a pop-up on the device screen. If the device is in use, the message displays immediately. If not, the notification appears as soon as the user accesses the device.
  • On iOS devices, messages are shown as notifications. Messages can be read instantly or can be viewed later under ‘Messages’ in the Hexnode UEM app. Unread message count will be shown as badges on the Hexnode UEM app. If the iOS device is locked, the message is displayed on the lock screen.
  • On a macOS device, the message is shown as a notification pop-up. Unread messages can be accessed later using the Hexnode UEM app.
  • On Windows 10/11 PC, messages are shown in the Notification Center. Unread messages can be accessed later using the Hexnode UEM app.

Pro tip—keep messages concise and direct. For example:

“Your device (%devicename%) requires an update to version (%osversion%) ASAP”

Short messages ensure users don’t miss important details.
