Samsung Tablet Auto Update over CellularSolved

Hi there,

I have a fleet of Samsung Galaxy Tab Active4 Pros that I am trying to keep updated. We have our main policy set to “Update Automatically”. These tablets are in public transit buses that we do not want to connect to wifi. We want to keep the tablets on their unlimited data cellular connections so as not to break the connection to our software that drivers use for pickups/drop offs when the drivers leave the garage and would hop off wifi/onto cellular.

The issue I am running into is that the tablets will not download the Android updates over cellular data automatically. I am able to manually go to each bus and press the “download now” option and get the tablets to download the update over cellular but this is not very feasible with 140ish buses that are constantly on the move.

Is there a setting I am missing in my policy to force the tablets to download new Android updates over cellular and apply them or would I need to look at Samsung Knox for this? The tablets are mostly provisioned with an Agent Type of Samsung Knox and Enterprise Management Type of Android Enterprise – Device Owner if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

Hello @zradcliffe, thank you for reaching out!

To better understand the issue you’re facing, could you provide some additional details?

  • Are your tablets operating in kiosk mode? If so, could you let us know which type of kiosk mode is being used?
  • You mentioned that you can manually press the “Download Now” button to initiate the update. Could you confirm if this prompt appears after applying the OS update policy or if it is an option available within the device’s OS update settings?
  • Have you checked if the updates are being downloaded automatically when the devices are connected to a Wi-Fi network?
  • Could you confirm whether the device settings are configured to allow updates only over Wi-Fi?
  • Your insights into these would help us assist you more effectively. Looking forward to your response!

    Best regards,

Hey Ben,

  • Yes, they operate in kiosk mode most of the day to limit what applications the drivers can use on the tablets. They are in Android Multi App Kiosk if that answers your question.
  • I can only get to the “Download Now” option if I exit kiosk mode and have the device check for an update in the settings menu so its just the usual android Download now.
  • If a tablet is connected to the wifi, yes it will automatically start downloading the update. However, we do not want the tablets on the wifi at all for fear of them losing/breaking their connection to the Bus Route software we use when switch from wifi to cellular when drivers leave the garage.
  • I am unable to find any settings that specifically control updating the firmware of the device other than a “Automatically download updates over wifi” option in the settings of the tablet. If I go into the settings of the play store, the network options show to update all apps at any time over any connection.

Thanks!
