Hello @marien! Personally owned devices, or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), refers to employees using their own personal devices for work. Corporate-owned devices, on the other hand, are provided by the organization and typically have more restrictive management policies compared to personal devices. To ensure device and data protection, IT admins usually rely on a UEM (Unified Endpoint Management) solution that helps manage both types of devices by enforcing different security policies and access controls based on the device type.

Thank you. Can you please elaborate on how UEM solutions manage the devices?

Hi @marien, welcome to Hexnode Connect! Thank you @sybylla for providing a helpful overview.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a great option for organizations that want to protect corporate data without managing the entire device. Since employees are already familiar with the interface and capabilities of their own devices, implementing a BYOD policy helps reduce the learning curve associated with new devices and in turn, boosts productivity. Whereas, corporate-owned devices are fully managed by the organization with comprehensive control over the device functionalities. A UEM solution like Hexnode UEM can help manage personal and corporate devices easily while remotely monitoring the devices from a centralized console.

  • Personal Devices (BYOD):
For employees using personal devices, Hexnode utilizes a business container setup to containerize corporate data on iOS devices, and for Android devices, a work profile is created that keeps corporate data separate from personal data. IT admins can manage and secure only the work profile, without accessing personal information thereby maintaining user privacy. Enrollment of BYO devices can be done through methods such as User Enrollment for iOS devices and Android Enterprise – Profile Owner for Android devices.
Hexnode also offers features specifically designed for these devices, such as the corporate wipe, which removes only corporate files, apps, and configurations without affecting the user’s personal data.
  • Corporate Devices:
With corporate-owned devices, IT admins have full control over the device. The organization can enforce stricter policies, ensuring devices are used solely for work purposes. Corporate-owned iOS devices can be enrolled in supervised mode for enhanced management capabilities, while Android devices can utilize enrollment methods such as Android Enterprise – Device Owner and Work Profile on Company-Owned Device.

    • Android Enterprise – Device Owner manages the entire device for corporate use, while Work Profile on Company-Owned devices are designed to support both corporate and personal use by securely separating work and personal data on a company-owned device.
    • When devices are fully managed, device management capabilities increase, offering advanced functionalities such as Kiosk support, Web Content Filtering, Clear Activation Lock, and Lost Mode for iOS devices in supervised mode. For Android devices enrolled in Device Owner mode, features include Kiosk Mode, Factory Reset Protection, private DNS setup, Silent Enterprise App Installation amongst others.

While BYOD offers flexibility, corporate-owned devices provide organizations with enhanced security and control that are crucial for protecting corporate data and building a secure workspace.
Hope this helped. Thanks for reaching out to us!

Best regards,
