Locked Display SettingsSolved

Hey everyone,

I recently took over an IT admin role, and I’m dealing with a locked display settings issue on a boardroom laptop connected to a TV. All options under Settings → Display are greyed out.

The previous admin supposedly set this up to prevent accidental changes, but I have no idea how. I checked HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers and even deleted all the keys there—still no luck. I also checked group policy but couldn’t find any restrictions.

Any ideas on what I might be missing?

I’ve only seen the display settings greyed out in two situations:

  1. The device is running an unlicensed version of windows.
  2. A GPO is preventing users from changing the settings.

I’d double-check group policy again.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think the display properties for the device might be stored in this registry location:

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VIDEO

Try checking there and see if any restrictions are applied.

Try deleting these three registry keys:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\ScaleFactors

This forces Windows to forget previously used monitors and their settings. When you reconnect the monitor, Windows should rediscover it as if it’s the first time, resetting the display settings to their default values.

⚠ Warning: This worked for me, but I can’t guarantee it will work for you. Proceed at your own risk.

Thanks, everyone! Turns out it wasn’t a registry issue but a Local Group Policy setting.

For anyone else facing this issue, check:
Local Computer Policy → User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Control Panel → Display, then disable the “Disable the Display Control Panel” policy.

Appreciate all the help!
