How to convert personal Apple IDs to managed Apple IDsSolved

Hello!

I’m getting ready to set up Apple Business Manager for one of my clients. They’ve been struggling without the ability to manage Apple IDs, and with high staff turnover, it’s been a real headache.

So, if I create an ABM account using the company’s domain, what happens to the existing Apple IDs that are already using work emails?

Is there a way to turn those existing Apple IDs into managed ones?

Yes, you can! Once you perform the domain capturing, users with Apple IDs using that domain will be prompted to either change their Apple ID to a personal email or have it converted into a Managed Apple ID.

Oh great, so it is possible! How exactly does “domain capturing” work? Can someone walk me through it?

Hi @verbnigge! If a company wants to take control of all Apple IDs using its domain, they can use a process called domain capture. This lets the organization verify ownership of the domain and convert any existing Apple IDs using that domain into Managed Apple IDs.

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Log in to Apple Business Manager with an account that has either the Administrator or People Manager role.
  2. Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then go to Preferences > Managed Apple IDs.
  3. In the Domains section, find the domain you want to capture and select Domain Capture next to it. Note that, once domain capture is enabled, it can’t be undone.
  4. Click Start Domain Capture and review the details:
    1. How many Managed Apple Accounts currently exist under that domain.
    2. Confirmation that the domain is locked for changes.
    3. The beginning of a 30-day transition period.
  5. Once the domain capturing is complete, all Apple IDs using the domain will be converted into Managed Apple IDs.
