Hi, I’m so confused between major and minor updates when it comes to iOS devices. Can someone explain the difference?

Hello @cameron, I will help you out on this.
Major updates (like iOS 16 → iOS 17) introduce new features in functionality, user interface, and general appearance. These are software upgrades, and they are released much less frequently—usually once a year.
Whereas minor updates (like iOS 16 → iOS 16.1) introduce bug fixes, security patches, and small enhancements. These are software updates, and they are released more frequently to improve stability and security.
Okay, I think I would like to test the updates before rolling them out. Is there a way to defer the updates based on their types?
Hi @cameron, welcome to Hexnode Connect!
You can use Hexnode’s Force delayed software update option, available for iOS devices, to delay the updates. However, updates cannot be deferred based on type.
To delay the updates, you can follow these steps:
- On your Hexnode UEM console, navigate to Policies > New Policy.
- Provide a suitable policy name and description.
- Under iOS > OS Updates, click on Configure.
- Check the Force delayed software updates box and specify the number of days to delay updates. (0 – 90 days). The default delay is 30 days.
- Click Save and associate the policy with the device.

Hi, I just have a doubt. What if I needed to update the OS manually within the deferral period?
Hi @elliot, welcome to Hexnode Connect.
You can use the Update OS action to push updates to the devices. To do this, select the required devices under the Manage tab and navigate to Actions > Update OS in your Hexnode UEM console. To know more, check out our help document on enforcing software updates on iOS devices.
