Using AirTags to track shared office equipmentSolved

Hey,

Our organization uses AirTags to keep track of shared office assets like portable projectors, and other frequently used equipment. Since multiple team members need access to these items, we’re considering using AirTag sharing in Find My (iOS 17) to allow multiple employees to locate them when needed.

Has anyone tried this in a workplace setting? Are there any challenges or best practices we should be aware of?

Yes, we’ve used it for shared IT equipment. As long as everyone is using iOS 17 or later and has iCloud Keychain enabled, they can see the item in Find My without getting tracking notifications. Just remember, each AirTag can only be shared with up to five people in addition to the owner.

That’s interesting! Can borrowers use all the features, like playing a sound or using precision finding?

Yes, they can! Borrowers can see the location, play a sound, and use Precision finding if they have a compatible iphone. The only thing they can’t do is share the Airtag with someone else—only the owner can manage sharing.

Makes sense. What happens if an employee leaves the company? Can we easily remove them from tracking access?

Good question! The owner can stop sharing the Airtag at any time in Find My. Just go to the Find My app, tap Items, select the Airtag, tap the person’s name, then tap Stop Sharing. Once removed, they won’t see the item’s location anymore.

Yeah, definitely a good idea to remove them ASAP. We had a case where someone left the company but was still listed as a borrower—caused a bit of confusion. Plus, since only five people can be added, it’s better to free up spots for those who actually need access.
