Can’t access Recovery mode using cmd + R for reinstalling macOSSolved

Hi guys!   

I’m having some issues with my Mac and need to reinstall macOS. I tried using the cmd + R shortcut to enter Recovery mode, but it’s just not working for me. I really want to restore my system to its factory settings, but I’m stuck.   

Is there an alternative method to reinstall macOS if cmd + R isn’t functioning? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

First of all, can I ask if you’re using an M series chip? Accessing recovery mode on M series Macs is a bit different, so knowing this could help us narrow down the issue.

No, I’m not using an M1 or any M-series Mac—mine is an intel based model.

Since yours is an Intel-based Mac, you should be able to access recovery mode by pressing ⌘ + r during startup. If that isn’t working, you can try Option + ⌘ + r to initiate Internet recovery mode. This option should load the latest macOS version compatible with your device, allowing you to reinstall the OS without relying on your Mac’s internal recovery system.

Thanks, @wilma! I’ll give internet recovery a shot. But if that doesn’t work, are there other ways to reinstall macOS?

Well, if Internet recovery doesn’t work, you can create a bootable USB installer for macOS. You’ll need access to another Mac to download the macOS installer from the App store and set up the bootable drive. Here’s the general process: 

  1. Download the macOS installer on a secondary Mac. 
  2. Use a USB drive (at least 16GB) and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). 
  3. Set up the USB installer using terminal commands. 

After setting up the USB, restart your Mac, hold down the option key during startup, and select the USB drive to boot from it. This method lets you reinstall macOS directly from the USB. It’s a bit more complicated, but here’s a document you can refer:
