Restrict installation of macOS Sequoia beta updateSolved

Recently, Apple has begun releasing beta updates for Sequoia, but our organization prefers to wait for the official public release before installing them. Since it is only a developer and public beta, it might pose issues such as device instability and frequent crashing, affecting our macOS devices and potentially leading to security risks. I have learned that if an Apple ID is registered in the Apple Beta Software Program, it may receive beta updates for Sequoia. Is there any way we can prevent the installation of the Sequoia beta update?

Hello @roosevelt,

Thank you for reaching out. We understand your concern regarding the early beta version of Sequoia. If your concern is about restricting the sign-in of an Apple ID, which is a reason for the macOS Sequoia beta update, we have you covered. Hexnode offers macOS restrictions that can prevent users from signing in with an Apple ID. You can check the “Users can modify account” restriction in policies under macOS > Security & Privacy, which restricts users from adding another Apple ID to the macOS device. If the device does not have any Apple ID associated with it, this restriction will prevent users from adding one.

If you have any further questions or need more assistance, feel free to contact us.

Thank you for the information. We have an issue where some of our devices need to be signed in with an Apple ID. What if those Apple IDs are registered in the Apple Beta Software Program and can still install the Sequoia beta update? Do we have any workaround for this kind of issue?

Yes, Hexnode offers a solution to prevent installing beta updates if the Apple ID signed in is part of the Apple Beta Software Program. You can follow the steps below to restrict the user from installing beta updates:

  1. Log in to your Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Navigate to Policies > New Policy. Assign a suitable name.
  3. Go to macOS > Patches & Updates > Software Update Preferences. Click Configure.
  4. Select Deny from the Install pre-release software drop-down.

Please refer to our help documentation on configuring macOS software update preferences for more information.
